Charlotte and Amy discuss Amy's journey to becoming a Health Navigator, having started as a PA in the mid-nineties and working in internal medicine, then sports medicine and obesity medicine.  Amy saw that many patients needed someone to work one-on-one with them, answering their questions and helping them navigate their issues and the healthcare system. As a Health Navigator, she draws on her empathic nature and communication skills, her research acumen and her resourcefulness. An area of particular focus in her work is healthy literacy -- helping clients understand terminology, so that they can understand  how it relates to their condition(s) and treatment. She explains that her ultimate goal is to educate and empower clients, so that they can become good self-advocates and attain better health.
